Standby Generator Installation and Solar Panel Installation in Asbury Park, NJ | 10 kW of Solar and a 22 kW Standby

Asbury Park, NJ · Client since July 2025

James in Asbury Park has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since July of 2025. He signed for the standby generator and the solar array on the same day, and both were finished inside four months.

A 22 kW standby in September

The machine is a Generac Guardian 22 kW home standby, model 7042-2, delivering 19.5 kW on natural gas, which is what this house runs on. It was commissioned on 26 September 2025 and stands outdoors beside the meter behind a 200-amp service-rated transfer switch with surge protection built in.

The house is 3,283 square feet and its electrical calculation comes to 25,148 watts. Air conditioning accounts for 8,000 of that, and two load-management modules take it off the top while the generator is running, bringing the figure the machine has to hold to 17,148 watts. The code calculation asks for a minimum of 18 kW on natural gas and the machine delivers 19.5, so there is margin on both counts.

23 panels, 10 kW, in October

The array followed four weeks later: twenty-three 435-watt panels, 10 kW in total, on Unirac mounting with an Enphase IQ8 microinverter behind each one. Estimated first-year production is 9,938 kWh and the utility is JCP&L. It was commissioned on 24 October 2025.

Ten kilowatts on a 3,283 square foot house is a substantial array, and the reason it is sized that way is sitting in the paragraph above. The load survey done for the generator is a complete picture of what this household actually uses, appliance by appliance, and that same picture is what tells you how much production is worth installing.

Designed as one job

Most households arrive at solar and standby power years apart, from different companies, with two separate surveys that do not quite agree. Doing them together is not merely more convenient.

Both systems connect at the service panel. Both change what that panel is carrying. The generator survey establishes the household’s real demand; the array is sized against the same figures rather than against a rule of thumb; and the electrical work for the two — the panel, the interconnection, the permitting — is planned once instead of twice, by people who already know what the other system is going to need.

The generator was last serviced on 19 August 2026.

Questions from Asbury Park homeowners

SolarHow are the roof penetrations waterproofed?

Penetrations have to be flashed and sealed by a method appropriate to the roofing material and the mounting system -- the residential code's solar provisions require it specifically. It is the detail that decides whether an array is a twenty-five-year installation or a future leak.

Standby generatorWhich way should the generator face?

Orientation has to comply with the installation instructions and must not create an unsafe exhaust or carbon-monoxide condition. Windows, doors, soffit openings, intake vents, window wells and mechanical fresh-air intakes all bear on it. Which way the machine faces is part of the site design, not an aesthetic choice made at the end.

Standby generatorWhat size standby generator does a Asbury Park home need?

The correct size is decided by the electrical loads the generator is expected to run, not by the square footage of the house. Central air, heat pumps, electric heat, well and sump pumps, refrigerators and freezers, electric ranges and dryers, pool equipment and EV chargers all count. Where a load is connected automatically, the generator either has the capacity for it or an approved load-management system controls it.
