Should trees be cut down before installing solar?
Only where the production benefit justifies it and doing so is legally and environmentally appropriate. A good installer quantifies what a particular tree costs in production rather than recommending removal as a matter of course. Ownership of the tree, municipal tree ordinances, neighbors' trees and regrowth all come into it.
How does an optimizer system differ from microinverters?
An optimizer system puts DC power optimizers at the modules and a single central inverter elsewhere; a microinverter system puts a small inverter at each module. Both can provide module-level monitoring and rapid shutdown when properly designed -- they are different architectures rather than one being the upgrade of the other.
What is an interconnection application?
The technical application to the electric distribution company asking permission to connect the array to the grid. The utility may review the system size, the inverter, the one-line diagram, the service configuration, the export capability and the capacity of the circuit it would connect to.
