Standby Generator Installation
A 22 kW Generac standby generator:
Gus in Farmingdale, NJ had Green Sun Energy Services install a Generac 22/21 kW natural gas standby generator in September of 2025. The home is served by a 150-amp electrical service, and the system was sized for 2,088 square feet of living space.
The generator is the Generac Next Generation Air-Cooled model (Model 7260), and it connects to the house through a 150-amp service entrance rated automatic transfer switch with an integrated surge protection device (Model G0099310). That arrangement means the transfer switch sits at the service entrance — when JCP&L power goes out, the switch detects the loss, signals the generator to start, and moves the load over automatically. Gus does not have to do anything. The whole-house configuration keeps every circuit live during an outage rather than forcing a choice about which loads matter most.
One Load Management Module is included to handle one 60-amp device — typically a central air conditioning circuit or an electric range. When the generator is running and demand climbs toward the unit’s limit, the module can shed that one large load automatically so the generator is never pushed past its capacity.
Connectivity runs through cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, so Gus can check the generator’s status and receive alerts without being home. The unit sits on a 5,000 PSI precast concrete pad (54″ × 32″ × 3″, 190 lbs) and starts on a 12-volt battery. The electrical run and gas plumbing each extend up to 20 feet as part of the installation. Grounding ties #6 AWG copper wire from the water main to the service entrance main.
The installation carries a 5-year limited warranty from Generac on the equipment and a 5-year limited workmanship warranty from Green Sun Energy Services on the installation itself.
Gus also enrolled in a Green Sun service plan that includes an annual maintenance visit and an extended parts-and-labor warranty, so the generator is looked after on a regular schedule going forward.
Excellent service, follow-up, and an outstanding experience throughout the entire process! We were extremely happy with Green Sun Energy Services from the first day through the final Township approvals. They even coordinated with the gas company to install a larger gas meter for our new generator.
A special thank-you to Jennifer for her consistent follow-up and help getting everything completed. We highly recommend the team!

Standby generator questions from Farmingdale homeowners
How deep does the electrical conduit have to be buried?
It depends on the wiring method and the location; there is no single burial depth for every installation. The National Electrical Code governs underground wiring and sets minimum cover in a table, and the conduit type, the location and the physical protection all change the answer.
Is an emergency shutdown required?
The 2023 National Electrical Code contains requirements addressing emergency shutdown of generator prime movers. Whether and how they apply is determined from the generator's rating, its location, the model and the installation, and the factory equipment is evaluated against them rather than presumed to comply.
Can the existing natural-gas service in a Farmingdale home supply a generator?
Often yes, but the gas system has to be evaluated first. The review covers the generator's BTU demand, meter capacity, available pressure, regulator capacity, pipe diameter and length, and every other gas appliance in the house -- furnace, boiler, water heater, range and fireplace among them.
