The generator was commissioned that August: 14 kW on natural gas, on a 100-amp service-entrance switch with surge protection, sized against a 14 kW calculation for the 1,451 square foot house. One condition was set out before the work: six feet of the garage had to be cleared back from the door openings to give the electrical crew room to work. It sounds trivial and it is not – the transfer switch and the conduit runs need real working space, and an installation day that begins with moving somebody’s belongings is a day that finishes late. A sump pump, a refrigerator, a washer and a gas dryer make up the load, and the generator is supported by annual maintenance, a ten-year extended parts-and-labor warranty and monitoring we manage.

Does new gas piping have to be pressure tested in Edison?
Yes. Gas piping subject to the adopted fuel-gas code must be inspected and tested before it is accepted. New Jersey adopts the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, which governs the inspection, the test pressure and how long the test has to hold.
How can a whole house be carried on a smaller electrical service?
Through load management. One or more large loads are controlled so they do not start at the same moment, or shut down briefly if generator demand climbs too high. That is what allows whole-house coverage where the raw sum of every connected load would otherwise exceed the machine.
What is a service-entrance-rated transfer switch?
One that is listed for use as service equipment when installed in the appropriate configuration. These are commonly used for whole-house systems, where the transfer switch becomes part of the home's service arrangement rather than sitting downstream of it.
