Ted from Atlantic Highlands, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since July of 2019. The 20 kW Generac standby was installed by another company in October of 2013, and in 2019 the servicing switched to Green Sun. One of our annual service plans supports it: spark plug and air filter, oil and filter, battery inspection, load testing and a full performance check each year, the most recent completed in January of 2026 with 219 hours on the meter against 67 at that first visit. A service call in June of 2026 cleared a controller fault and then ran the machine through a simulated outage to confirm it picked up the house. On the bay in Atlantic Highlands, where coastal storms are what usually takes the power out, the whole house runs from the generator through a managed transfer switch.

Do underground utilities have to be marked before the trench is dug?
Yes. Underground facilities must be addressed through the New Jersey One Call process before the excavation begins, which is what protects buried gas, electric, telecommunications and water lines from being struck.
Does the transfer switch need flood protection as well as the generator?
Yes. A flood review should cover much more than the generator enclosure. FEMA recommends that a residential standby system consider elevation or protection of the generator, the transfer switch, the normal and emergency panels, the feeders and the control wiring together.
Can a standby generator run central air conditioning?
Yes, when it is sized for it. The design has to account for both the running demand and the starting surge of the air-conditioning equipment. Load-management equipment can be used where necessary so that demand does not all arrive at once.
