Giovanni from Holmdel, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since April of 2022. The generator was commissioned that August: a Generac Guardian rated 21 kW on natural gas, on a 200-amp service-entrance switch with five smart management modules and surge protection. Five modules is the most on any installation we have written up, and the 5,189 square foot house explains why – the calculation asked for 19 kW, and covering a house that size from a single machine means the load has to be actively balanced rather than simply carried. Three sump pumps sit on that load, which is the part that cannot wait: the storm that takes the power out is the same storm filling the basement. Does a generator in Holmdel have to sit twelve inches above the flood elevation?
That figure should not be treated as a universal rule without looking at the actual property. The required elevation can depend on the flood-zone designation, the municipal freeboard, the Design Flood Elevation, Coastal A or V Zone conditions, NJDEP requirements and the applicable building-code provisions. Does the house run on the generator during its weekly exercise?
Not necessarily -- it depends on the generation of equipment, the controller and the configuration. Traditional systems commonly exercise without transferring the house at all. Newer equipment with current controls may support different exercise and transfer behaviour.
Does a 200-amp service need a 200-amp transfer switch?
A transfer switch installed in the service path has to be rated appropriately for the service and the configuration. A 200-amp service commonly uses a 200-amp service-rated switch, but the actual design is confirmed by the electrician rather than assumed from the service size.
