Irene from Belmar, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since September of 2016, which makes this one of the longer relationships on our books. The generator was commissioned that November: a Generac Guardian rated 19.5 kW on natural gas, feeding two 150-amp transfer switches with a smart management module and surge protection. The load calculation asked for 25 kW across the 4,000 square foot house, which is more than a single machine of this size can carry outright – so the management module does the balancing, holding back the heaviest draw for a moment when several things start at once rather than splitting the house into circuits that matter and circuits that do not. Two sump pumps, a double electric oven, a refrigerator, a washer, a gas dryer and a dishwasher make up the load. An annual maintenance visit and a ten-year extended parts-and-labor warranty sit behind the machine.

Glen was very professional and answered all my questions and I had many. The installation was on time and professionally done. I signed up for yearly maintenance. The generator kicks in automatically when we lose power. After enduring 11 days without power during Sandy it’s definitely peace of mind! I can recommend Green Sun enthusiastically.

Thank you, Irene. Eleven days is the kind of outage that changes how a household thinks about backup power for good. The 22 kW Generac at your home in Belmar carries two panels and starts on its own, and putting it on annual maintenance is what keeps that automatic. Many questions are welcome; they usually mean the right machine gets chosen.
Standby generator questions from Belmar homeowners
Will a 22 kW generator run an entire Belmar house?
For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.
Why can't a generator be wired straight into the panel?
Because a standby generator needs approved transfer or interconnection equipment so that it cannot unintentionally energise the utility supply. The transfer switch is one of the most important electrical-safety components in the whole installation, not an accessory to it.
How is the gas pipe size worked out?
From the generator's demand, the available pressure, the pipe length, the allowable pressure drop, the fittings, the pipe material and every other appliance connected to the system. The adopted fuel-gas code carries the sizing requirements and tables, and the model's published fuel consumption goes into the calculation.
