Holmdel, NJ · Client since October 2020

Elie from Holmdel, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since October of 2020. The generator was commissioned in August of 2021: a Generac Guardian rated 19.5 kW on natural gas, on a 200-amp whole-house transfer switch. The load calculation asked for 18 kW across 5,000 square feet, carrying three refrigerators, two sump pumps, a heat pump, a washer, a gas dryer and a dishwasher. A heat pump is the item that sets the peak on a list like that, since it draws several times its running load in the instant it starts, and two sump pumps are the ones that cannot be allowed to stop. Even the Verizon box had to move three feet before the work could begin – siting a machine this size is mostly a matter of clearance. The generator is supported by annual maintenance, an extended parts-and-labor warranty, and monitoring we manage.

Standby generator questions from Holmdel homeowners

How is the gas pipe size worked out?

From the generator's demand, the available pressure, the pipe length, the allowable pressure drop, the fittings, the pipe material and every other appliance connected to the system. The adopted fuel-gas code carries the sizing requirements and tables, and the model's published fuel consumption goes into the calculation.

Will a 22 kW generator run an entire Holmdel house?

For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.

How far does a generator have to be from a window or door?

Manufacturer guidance requires substantial separation from operable windows, doors, vents and other openings through which exhaust could enter the house -- commonly five feet for the applicable air-cooled configurations. The exact model's current installation manual has to be checked before a location is approved.
