Shince in Holmdel has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since December of 2022. The standby generator was commissioned on 16 March 2023 and the solar array five days later.
A 22 kW machine, three modules
The house is 3,000 square feet on a 200-amp service and its electrical calculation comes to 25,456 watts. Air conditioning is 6,000 of that. An electric vehicle charger accounts for a large part of the rest, and it is the load that makes this installation worth describing.
The machine is a Generac Guardian 22 kW, model 7042-2, delivering 19.5 kW on natural gas, behind a 200-amp service-rated transfer switch with surge protection. Three smart management modules sit on it — one rated at 100 amps and two at 50 — and between them they take 10,400 watts out of the calculation, leaving 15,056 for the generator to hold.
29 panels and 11.6 kW
The array is twenty-nine Hanwha 400-watt panels, 11.6 kW in total, on Snap-N-Rack mounting with a SolarEdge SE10000H HD Wave inverter and an optimizer on every panel. Estimated first-year production is 13,962 kWh and the utility is JCP&L. It was commissioned on 21 March 2023.
The car waits, the house does not
An electric car changes what an outage means for a household, and it changes it in both directions.
A car charger draws on the same scale as central air conditioning, and unlike air conditioning it draws steadily for hours rather than cycling. Left unmanaged it would force a much larger generator, or force the household to remember to stop charging every time the power failed, which nobody reliably does at two in the morning.
Managed, it becomes the easiest load on the property to deal with, because it is the one thing in the house that genuinely does not need to run right now. A refrigerator cannot pause for six hours. A sump pump certainly cannot. A car sitting on a driveway with three hundred miles in it can wait until the utility comes back, and if it cannot, the household can choose to charge it once the heavier loads have settled.
That is the whole logic of load management stated in one appliance: the generator is not sized for everything at once, it is sized for everything that cannot wait — and the car is put firmly in the other category.
