Standby generator questions from Brick homeowners
Does new gas piping have to be pressure tested in Brick?
Yes. Gas piping subject to the adopted fuel-gas code must be inspected and tested before it is accepted. New Jersey adopts the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, which governs the inspection, the test pressure and how long the test has to hold.
How is a standby generator grounded?
The grounding and bonding arrangement depends on the transfer-switch configuration, and in particular on whether the neutral is switched and the generator therefore treated as a separately derived system. It is designed by a qualified electrical contractor rather than assumed from another installation.
How much clearance is needed above a generator?
Applicable air-cooled guidance requires roughly five feet of overhead clearance from structures, overhangs and projections. That is what rules out a good many low decks, roof overhangs and alcoves as generator locations, and it is worth establishing early rather than after a site is chosen.
