Jay Philip from Matawan, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since February of 2017. He signed in the second week of February and the generator was running by the first of May, a 9 kW Generac in an aluminum enclosure set on its own pad, wired to a sixteen circuit transfer switch covering the systems that matter when the power drops. A Generac service contract has kept it maintained since, with scheduled visits and monitoring between them. Green Sun Energy is extremely professional, and kept us informed during the entire installation Their electricians and plumbers are top professionals as well, they left the house clean and even took there shoes off and cleaned up during and after the installation. They made the permits and approvals seamless, everything was handled with such professionalism. Standby generator questions from Matawan homeowners
Can the existing natural-gas service in a Matawan home supply a generator?
Often yes, but the gas system has to be evaluated first. The review covers the generator's BTU demand, meter capacity, available pressure, regulator capacity, pipe diameter and length, and every other gas appliance in the house -- furnace, boiler, water heater, range and fireplace among them.
Is a standby generator the same as a portable one?
No. A home standby generator is permanently installed and automatically connected to the home's electrical and fuel systems. A portable normally has to be placed, fuelled, started and connected by hand each time, using approved connection equipment. The standby machine is designed as an integrated backup-power system rather than as something you fetch out of the garage.
Is an emergency shutdown required?
The 2023 National Electrical Code contains requirements addressing emergency shutdown of generator prime movers. Whether and how they apply is determined from the generator's rating, its location, the model and the installation, and the factory equipment is evaluated against them rather than presumed to comply.
