Twelve circuits and a 50-amp switch
This is a modest installation, and it is worth writing up precisely because it is modest. Not every house needs a machine that could run a restaurant.
It is a 1,000 square foot house on a 150-amp service, and almost everything with a real appetite for power runs on gas: the furnace, the clothes dryer, the range and the hot water. What is left on the electrical side comes to 10,020 watts, and none of it is large enough to be worth managing — the air conditioning is a single 1,500-watt unit, so nothing has to stand down while the generator runs.
The machine is a Generac Guardian 11 kW home standby in a steel enclosure, model 6437. It delivers 10 kW on natural gas, which is what this house runs on, and it stands outdoors beside the meter.
Behind it is a 50-amp transfer switch feeding twelve dedicated circuits rather than a whole-house switch sized to the service. Twelve circuits sounds austere until you count what is actually in the house: the refrigerator, the microwave, the garage door, the furnace controls, and the lighting and outlets that a household in an outage genuinely reaches for. On a property this size, twelve circuits is not a compromise between what was wanted and what was affordable. It is the whole list.
The generator was commissioned on 27 June 2013 and was last serviced in September 2025.
2,400 square feet washed in April
On 16 April 2025 we soft washed 2,400 square feet of exterior. The work is done by the solution rather than by force: a sodium hypochlorite and surfactant mix applied at low pressure, left to kill the algae and mildew growing on the surface, then rinsed. Pressure alone takes the staining off and leaves the growth rooted in place, so it returns within a season.
