A 16 kW Generac Guardian standby generator:
Charles in Colts Neck, NJ had Green Sun Energy Services install a Generac Guardian 16 kW standby generator in April of 2021. The home is served by a 150-amp electrical service, and the system was sized for 2,450 square feet of living space. Fuel is natural gas.
The transfer arrangement is a managed whole-house setup using a Generac 150-amp automatic transfer switch (service disconnect, Model RXSW150A3). When utility power from JCP&L goes out, the switch detects the outage and signals the generator to start, then transfers the load automatically — no manual steps required. The whole-house configuration means Charles does not have to pick and choose which circuits stay live during an outage.
The generator itself is the Generac Guardian Model 7176, powered by an 816cc G-Force engine and fitted with the Evolution 2.0 controller. That controller provides Wi-Fi connectivity so Charles can check the generator’s status and receive alerts remotely. The unit sits on a DiversiTech prefabricated concrete pad (54″ × 31″ × 3″) and is finished with a Bisque Fascia Base Trim Kit. A Group 26-R 12-volt battery handles the engine start. Installation included up to 20 feet of electrical work and up to 20 feet of gas plumbing.
Green Sun last serviced the generator in February of 2026 under a service plan that includes annual maintenance visits — keeping the unit ready to run when it is needed.

Standby generator questions from Colts Neck homeowners
How far does a generator have to be from a window or door?
Manufacturer guidance requires substantial separation from operable windows, doors, vents and other openings through which exhaust could enter the house -- commonly five feet for the applicable air-cooled configurations. The exact model's current installation manual has to be checked before a location is approved.
Can the generator be connected to any nearby gas pipe?
No. The branch supplying the generator has to be sized for the flow and pressure the machine needs. A pipe that happens to be close by may be too small, or may already be carrying too much load. Undersized piping shows up as poor starting, unstable running, reduced output or a generator that shuts down under load.
Can a generator go in the side yard of a Colts Neck property?
Often yes, provided the side yard satisfies both the manufacturer's clearances and the municipality's zoning requirements. The site review covers the property-line setback, windows and doors, the gas and electric meters, the air conditioner, neighboring structures, flood conditions, service access and any local screening requirement.
