Standby Generator Installation
An 18 kW Generac standby generator:
In September of 2026, Green Sun Energy Services completed a standby generator installation at a residential property in Whiting, NJ. The home is served by JCP&L and has a 200-amp electrical service. The system runs on natural gas and is sized for 2,200 square feet of living space.
The generator itself is a Generac Next Generation Air-Cooled unit (Model 7259), rated at 18 kW on propane and 17 kW on natural gas. It includes cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity, which allows the homeowner to monitor and manage the system remotely. The generator was set on a 5,000 PSI precast concrete pad measuring 54 inches by 32 inches.
The transfer switch is a 200-amp service entrance rated automatic transfer switch with an integrated surge protection device (Generac Model G0099280). The configuration is managed whole-house, meaning the transfer switch controls the entire 200-amp service rather than a selected circuit subset. One Load Management Module was included to handle smart control of one 60-amp device, which allows the system to shed or restore that load automatically in response to generator demand. The installation included up to 20 feet of electrical work and 20 feet of gas plumbing.
The electrical work required grounding upgrades to meet New Jersey code. A number-4 AWG green-jacketed copper ground wire was run from the water main to the service entrance main. Compliance with NJAC 5:23-3.16 also required the installation of one grounding rod and an intersystem bonding bridge. These are not optional additions — they are code requirements that must be satisfied before the system can pass inspection. A 12-volt start battery was included with the unit.

Do generator requirements in Whiting differ from the next town over?
The manufacturer's equipment requirements do not change when you cross a municipal boundary into Whiting, but local zoning can. A township may impose its own side-yard and rear-yard setbacks, mechanical-equipment rules, screening, noise requirements and floodplain provisions. That is why every property gets a municipal zoning review rather than a general answer.
Is a standby generator the same as a portable one?
No. A home standby generator is permanently installed and automatically connected to the home's electrical and fuel systems. A portable normally has to be placed, fuelled, started and connected by hand each time, using approved connection equipment. The standby machine is designed as an integrated backup-power system rather than as something you fetch out of the garage.
Can a standby generator backfeed the utility lines?
A properly installed and functioning automatic transfer system is designed to prevent it. That is the point of the transfer switch: it stops generator power reaching the utility supply, where it could endanger line workers and damage equipment. Backfeeding is a risk of improvised connections, not of a correctly installed system.
