Standby Generator Service
A Generac 20 kW standby generator and annual service plan:
Michael in Skillman, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since September of 2013, when a Generac 20 kW standby generator was placed at the home. The unit is the Generac Model 5887 from the 5800 Series, rated at 20 kW on liquid propane and 18 kW on natural gas — the home runs it on natural gas. The transfer arrangement is a managed whole-house setup using a 90-amp automatic transfer switch, so when PSEG power goes out, the generator starts and the house transfers automatically. Michael does not have to choose which circuits stay live; the whole-house configuration covers the load.
Green Sun now handles the ongoing upkeep. The service plan covers scheduled annual maintenance visits, keeping the generator ready to run when it is needed. The generator was not originally installed by Green Sun, but Green Sun has taken it into the service program and looks after it each year.

Standby generator questions from Skillman homeowners
Does the generator need its own gas shutoff?
The fuel installation has to include the shutoff arrangements required by the adopted fuel-gas code and by the installation instructions. The valve must be positioned where it is accessible, both for servicing and for isolating the machine in an emergency.
What happens when the utility power comes back?
The system detects the return of acceptable utility power and transfers the house back automatically. The generator then runs through a programmed cool-down before shutting off and returning to standby. Nobody has to switch anything back by hand.
Will a 20 kW generator run an entire Skillman house?
For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.
