Aditya and Nita in Short Hills have been Green Sun Energy Services clients since April of 2018. The array went up that July, and the standby generator already on the property came onto our books six years later.

34 panels, two inverters, one cable

Thirty-four LG 365-watt panels, 12.41 kW in total, on Ecolibrium mounting with an optimizer on every panel, feeding a pair of SolarEdge SE5000H inverters in the basement. Estimated first-year production is 15,789 kWh and the utility is JCP&L. It was commissioned on 20 July 2018.

One item on the agreement had nothing to do with the roof: a network cable had to be run to the inverters before the system could be considered finished, and that was the household’s to arrange.

Monitoring only works if it can talk

This is the requirement that gets waved through at the point of sale and causes more irritation afterwards than any other, so it is worth setting out properly.

A modern inverter reports what the array is doing — panel by panel, hour by hour — and that reporting is not a luxury feature. It is the only way anyone finds out that one module has stopped producing, or that output has drifted down over two seasons, or that the system tripped in March and nobody noticed. An unmonitored array does not tell you it has a problem. It just quietly makes less electricity than it should, sometimes for years.

To report, the inverter needs a connection. And inverters live in basements and garages, which are precisely the places domestic Wi-Fi does not reach — concrete, ducting, distance from the router, and a signal that was marginal on the day of commissioning and unusable by the time the router is replaced.

A hardwired network cable removes all of that. It is a dull afternoon’s work for whoever runs it, and it is the difference between a system that is being watched and a system that merely could be.

A 24 kW machine added in 2024

The standby generator here is a Generac 24 kW from the 7200 series, model 7209, installed by another company. Its servicing came to us in September 2024 on a PowerBase Silver plan, and it was last serviced on 11 September 2025.

Which completes the same principle at the other end of the property. The array is monitored because a cable was run to it; the generator is on a service cycle because somebody now visits it on a schedule. Neither piece of equipment is capable of telling this household it needs attention on its own, and both of them will otherwise fail at the least convenient moment available.
