Solar Panel Installation and Soft Washing in Little Egg Harbor, NJ | One Unshaded South-Facing Roof

Little Egg Harbor, NJ · Client since September 2016

Richard and Genevieve in Little Egg Harbor have been Green Sun Energy Services clients since September of 2016. The array went up that October and we soft washed the property in June 2026.

Fifteen panels, one face, no shade

Most roofs make you compromise. They face the wrong way, or a chimney sits in the middle of the best section, or the only clear area is shaded by something belonging to next door. Almost every solar page on this site is a description of how a compromise was managed.

This roof did not ask for one. Fifteen panels went onto a single face at a 33-degree pitch on an azimuth of 158 degrees — within twenty-two degrees of due south — with shading measured at one percent. The whole array is one plane, one orientation, one set of conditions, and the modelled output for it comes out slightly above the reference case rather than below it, which is what an aspect this good and a sky this clear produce.

The array is 4.05 kW of Hyundai 270-watt black-framed panels on QuickMount rails, with an Enphase M215 microinverter behind every panel. Estimated first-year production is 5,692 kWh and the utility is Atlantic City Electric. It was commissioned on 15 October 2016.

A microinverter on each panel is worth having even on a roof like this one. The usual argument for them is shade tolerance, which this house does not need — but they also mean every panel is monitored individually, so a module that starts to underperform in year eight is visible as itself rather than as a slight dip in a whole string. On an array that is meant to run for decades, being able to see which panel is the problem is most of the value.

6,459 square feet washed in June

On 2 June 2026 we soft washed 6,459 square feet of the exterior. Soft washing does the work with the solution rather than with force: a sodium hypochlorite and surfactant mix is applied at low pressure, left to kill the algae and mildew growing on the surface, and rinsed off. Pressure alone strips the staining and leaves the growth rooted in the surface, so it returns within a season.

Questions from Little Egg Harbor homeowners

SolarAre panels designed for the wind near Little Egg Harbor?

Yes. The array and its mounting system have to be designed to resist the applicable wind loads, and coastal and exposed locations can carry different wind-design conditions from sheltered inland ones. It is one of the reasons the mounting system and its engineering are chosen for the site rather than by habit.

Soft washingCan pressure washing damage wood?

Yes. Excessive pressure can raise grain, splinter fibers and create visible wand marks in wood. Deck and fence cleaning should use pressure appropriate to the species, age and condition of the wood. Chemistry can often reduce how much mechanical pressure is necessary.

Soft washingWhat causes dark stripes on a pressure-washed driveway?

Uneven nozzle distance, pressure or overlapping passes can create visible cleaning lines. Professional surface-cleaning equipment can help achieve a more uniform result on large flat areas.
