Vincent from Holmdel, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since June of 2019. We installed a 16 kW Generac standby generator that September, sited outdoors beside the meter on a managed whole-house transfer switch. The load survey is what set the size: 3,000 square feet, two refrigerators, a washer and gas dryer, a dishwasher, a sump pump — and a well pump, which is the one that decides everything. A house on a well has no water at all when the power goes, not merely no light, so the generator has to carry the pump before anything else is considered. The system is covered by our top service plan: annual maintenance, an extended parts-and-labor warranty, and remote monitoring we manage directly, so a fault is seen here rather than discovered during a storm.

Standby generator questions from Holmdel homeowners
Can a standby generator backfeed the utility lines?
A properly installed and functioning automatic transfer system is designed to prevent it. That is the point of the transfer switch: it stops generator power reaching the utility supply, where it could endanger line workers and damage equipment. Backfeeding is a risk of improvised connections, not of a correctly installed system.
What does a whole-house generator actually mean?
Whole-house generally means the transfer equipment serves the home's main electrical system rather than a small emergency-circuit panel. It does not promise unlimited capacity. High-demand appliances may still be prioritized or briefly shed while generator capacity is being used elsewhere.
Can a generator be installed in a flood zone in Holmdel?
Yes, but the generator and its electrical equipment may need to be elevated or otherwise protected. The installation is evaluated against the property's FEMA flood zone, its Base Flood Elevation and Design Flood Elevation, the municipal flood ordinance, any applicable freeboard, and NJDEP requirements where they apply. It is a property-by-property assessment rather than a rule of thumb.
