A contractor who can design, permit, install, commission, maintain and repair the whole system rather than one who sells the machine. That means generator sizing and transfer equipment, disconnect and shutdown requirements, grounding and bonding, the manufacturer's own installation requirements, gas or propane capacity and pressure, the model-specific clearances, the municipal zoning setbacks, windows and vents and carbon-monoxide entry points, flood requirements where they apply, permits and inspections, utility coordination, load management, commissioning, warranty registration, monitoring and long-term service. The lowest proposal is not necessarily the lowest cost over the life of the system.
What should we do if it runs for more than a day?
Continuous running for twenty-four hours or more deserves attention. The manufacturer's continuous-use guidance covers a proper shutdown, an oil-level check, a leak inspection and maintenance based on the hours accumulated. Follow the safe shutdown procedure rather than opening or servicing a machine that is running.
How quickly does it take over?
The automatic start sequence normally begins within seconds of the controller deciding that utility power has failed or fallen outside acceptable limits. There is a deliberate short delay so that a momentary flicker does not trigger a full start and transfer. Exact timing depends on the controller, the transfer switch and the configuration.
