A 22 kW Generac standby generator:
Benjamin in Highlands, NJ brought Green Sun Energy Services on board to maintain a Generac 22 kW standby generator — Model 70432, part of the 7000 Series HNW line — that had already been installed at the home. The unit runs on natural gas and is connected to a 100-amp transfer switch in a managed whole-house arrangement on a 200-amp electrical service. That setup means that when JCP&L power goes out, the transfer switch detects the interruption, signals the generator to start, and moves the house load over automatically. Benjamin does not have to choose which circuits to protect — the whole house stays live. The generator includes Wi-Fi connectivity, so its status and any alerts are accessible remotely.
Green Sun did not install this generator, but took it over for regular maintenance. Each scheduled visit covers the checks and service that keep a standby unit ready to run when it is actually needed — a generator that sits for months between outages can fail quietly, and routine care is what catches small problems before they become ones that matter on the wrong night. The maintenance plan also carries an extended parts-and-labor warranty, adding a layer of coverage beyond the manufacturer’s warranty on the unit itself. Green Sun last serviced the generator in September of 2025.

Standby generator questions from Highlands homeowners
Will a larger gas meter be needed?
Possibly. A generator can significantly increase a home's maximum gas demand. If the existing meter or service cannot hold the required pressure while supplying the generator and the other appliances together, the gas utility may require an upgrade.
What is the main line circuit breaker on a generator?
It is the generator's primary AC output breaker. Worth knowing because if it is open the engine can run without delivering any power through the transfer system -- a machine that sounds like it is working while the house stays dark.
Will a 22 kW generator run an entire Highlands house?
For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.
