What is a solar panel system?

Solar panel systems (or solar energy systems) use Photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. Solar panel cells are made from silicon and were originally developed to power spacecraft and space stations. The cells are wired together in panels that typically measure about 4 feet by 2 ft by 1.5 inches deep. A group of solar panels mounted on a frame is called a solar panel array.

To provide electricity reliably and safely, solar panel system components typically include an inverter, wiring and optional battery storage and charge controller. Most solar panel systems convert the DC electricity that is produced by the solar panels into the common household form of electricity, alternating current (AC), by using an inverter. AC electricity can then be used to power your appliances directly, or feedback to an electric utility's grid. The DC electricity can also be stored directly in batteries for later use. In this case, to prevent overcharging or discharging of the batteries, a charge controller is used.

Yes, according to a report produced by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory entitled "A New Market Paradigm for Zero-Energy Homes: December 2006 The Comparative San Diego Case Study", Solar panels can increase the value of your home.

"The greatest single gain in value was $446,410 for a home in the SheaHomes communities with a PV system owned for 26.9 months (a 79% increase in value). In comparison, the single largest gain for a home in the comparison community was $378,769 for a home owned for 40.2 months (a 61% increase)."

When you lease your system, things are going to be different. "FannieMae, B2-3-04: Special Property Eligibility Considerations (12/16/2014)", indicates that: If the solar panels are leased from or owned by a third party under a power purchase agreement or other similar arrangement, the following are some of the requirements that apply: The solar panels may not be included in the appraised value of the property. The lease payment must be included in the debt-to-income (DTI) ratio calculation. This requirement does not apply in the case of a power purchase agreement if the payment goes entirely to pay for the energy. Any portion of the payment that does not go toward the purchase of the energy must be included in the DTI ratio.

What solar rebates and incentives are available for businesses in New Jersey?

There are currently five solar incentives available to businesses in New Jersey. What is The Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit?

According to the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA), A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the income taxes that a person or company claiming the credit would otherwise pay the federal government. The ITC is based on the amount of investment in solar property.

A taxpayer may claim a credit for qualified expenditures for a system that serves a dwelling unit located in the United States that is owned and used as a residence by the taxpayer. Expenditures with respect to the equipment are treated as made when the solar panel installation is completed. If the solar installation is at a new home, the "placed in service" date is the date of occupancy by the homeowner. Expenditures include labor costs for on-site preparation, assembly or original solar panel installation, and for piping or wiring to interconnect a system to the home. Does a New Roof Qualify for the Federal Tax Credit with Solar Installation?

If a roof replacement is required to support your solar panel system, the portion of roofing costs directly related to the solar installation may qualify for the Federal Tax Credit. Typically, only the roofing material beneath the solar array, not the entire roof, is eligible. It's important to consult a tax professional for guidance specific to your situation and ensure proper documentation is maintained for eligibility.

The instructions for Tax Form 5695 state the following: Qualified solar electric property costs. Qualified solar electric property costs are costs for property that uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in your home located in the United States. No costs relating to a solar panel or other property installed as a roof (or portion thereof) will fail to qualify solely because the property constitutes a structural component of the structure on which it is installed. Some solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles serve the function of both traditional roofing and solar electric collectors, and thus serve functions of both solar electric generation and structural support. These solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles can qualify for the credit. This is in contrast to structural components such as a roof's decking or rafters that serve only a roofing or structural function and thus do not qualify for the credit. The home doesn't have to be your main home.

The On Wednesday, July 28th, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) unanimously approved the highly anticipated Successor Solar Incentive Program (“SuSI Program”). The SuSI Program will support the development of 3,750 megawatts (MW) of new solar generation by 2026, effectively doubling the state’s current solar capacity and driving solar to become approximately 10 percent of the state’s total electricity supply. How do I read my electric bill after I go solar?

Can I get credit for producing my own electricity in New Jersey?

Yes. The energy that is produced by a solar panel system will first serve a home's electrical load. Then, if the solar panel system produces more electricity than the home needs at any given time, your utility credits the excess electricity at the same price you would pay for electricity from the utility - in effect turning the electrical meter backwards. This is called "Net Metering," and the credit will appear on the monthly utility bill. Should the home need more energy than the solar panel system is producing at any given time, the customer can be assured that the utility will provide the electricity that the home needs. Often, homeowners find that they receive credits during expensive peak daytime hours, and then use more utility power during less expensive evening hours.

What is Net Metering?

Net Metering is the policy that allows you to sell excess electricity back to the grid at the retail rate. This is great because the retail rate of NJ net metering is significantly higher than the wholesale rate that large power plants receive for the electricity they sell to the utility. Additionally, the ability to both buy and sell electricity from the grid allows you to balance your consumption and production, instead of letting any excess electricity you produce go to waste.

According to NJCEP, all electric utility companies regulated by the NJBPU (PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric, and Rockland Electric) and electric suppliers or providers must offer net metering to retail customers that generate electricity through renewable systems. To be eligible for net metering, the generating capacity of a system cannot exceed the customer's annual electric needs. The interconnection rules are intended primarily for customer-generators that are eligible to net meter. The rules include three levels of review process dependent upon the size of the generator and other criteria.

When is my anniversary date (What is my PTO date)

Can I change the anniversary date of my permission to operate (PTO) or interconnection date?

Yes. Your utility company will allow a one-time change to your anniversary date. Remember, if you have solar credits banked, this is when the utility company will pay you for the excess generation. If you have excess generation during the summer months, you want to be able to carry those credits into the fall and winter months to help offset your bills when your solar system is producing less energy. In general, we suggest that you set your anniversary date to the end of March. If you have electric heat or non-typical usage, your electric utility may recommend a different month.

What Are The Best Solar Panels?

Our clients are faced with a wide variety of choices from the size of the panels (watts), to efficiency ratings, to the material they are made from (Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline or Thin Film), to their warranty, to where the solar panels are made. We currently only use Monocrystalline silicon panels for residential solar panel installations because of their even coloring and uniform appearance. This high-purity silicon is made of single-crystal wafer cells cut from cylindrical crystal slabs. The deep blue color of the panels is because they are made from a single continuous ingot. While they cost more than other types of silicon, they are also the most efficient, producing more power per square foot than other types.

What is the lifespan of a solar panel system?

Solar panel systems last a long time depending on the amount of active use, or the amount of sunshine converted into electricity by the solar panels. Most systems are only in use for 6 to 8 hours per day. Manufacturers will usually provide from 10 to 20 year materials warranties (and 25 year production warranties) for the solar panels, and a 5 to 10-year warranty on the balance of system components. EnPhase provides a 25 year warranty on their micro-inverters. Solar panels have been reported to last 30 to 40 years.

We reached out to Glen and a couple of other groups because we wanted to see if this made sense before the federal tax credit expires next year. Glen simplified everything for us. He has been doing this for a while and he has answers for all the common questions. Glen was very patient with us as we peppered him with questions (sometimes asking the same questions over again). After comparing quotes, Glen's numbers were reasonable and we decided to go with him because of the favorable reviews and the thoroughness with which he explained the process to us. From start to end the communication was excellent, we always knew where we were in the process (a lot of paperwork but they do it all for you). When it came time to do the installation, the crew came and finished everything in less than a day. They cleaned up after themselves and when they left the only remnants of their work were the panels on the roof. It was obvious this was not their first rodeo. Now on this sunny 90+ degree day with two air conditioners humming, I look at the meter outside and see my house if being fully powere by the sun ... it is a great feeling! If you are considering solar, I highly recommend Green Sun. They are a class act and the engagement feels more like a partnership than a contractor relationship. Oh yeah, they also installed a gas generator for us and that process was equally professional and pleasurable.

Michael arrived and knew what the problem was before inspecting the generator. Generator running again 10 minutes later. Great communication. If they see a storm in the future, they reach out and give instructions in case you have an issue pop up. I met someone yesterday who was looking install Solar Panels and they mentioned how painful the sales presentation was (with a very high pressure approach). I told them I have had no issues with Green Sun and I have been very happy. Glen was very professional and informative in the presentation he gave. I also had a neighbor looking for Solar last year and tried to go with a competitor, but they kept delaying things with very inconsistent communication. The communication from both Glen and Chris was always consistent, keeping me in the loop all along the process as they pushed to finish my job before the end of 2020.

Glen from Green Sun is extremely professional, and kept us informed during the entire installation Their electricians and plumbers are top professionals as well, they left the house clean and even took there shoes off and cleaned up during and after the installation. They made the permits and approvals seamless, everything was handled with such professionalism. Have to say we had a 15 minute power outage today, and the generator kicked on within 10 seconds and the whole house had power, Wow, can't image life without a Green Sun Generator, such peace of mind. We've done a ton of research on solar, so we had lots of questions for every sales rep that stopped by our home. Unfortunately, many sales reps just followed a script and often did not know about the specifics of their equipment. We were willing to spend a little more money if we felt comfortable with the company or the sales rep, but none of the reps impressed us. Until we met Glen. He is one of the owners of the company--friendly and informative and knew all of the technical details that we wanted to know. Green Sun actually offered the best price, so it was a double win for us! Glen spent a lot of time going over things and tweaking our system until we were happy--we had researched many different panels used by different companies, so there were alot of questions on our side. He was very patient with us. After we signed the contract, things moved along quickly. Everything was very upfront and communicated well. Glen kept us constantly updated on when the panels would arrive, the workers, everything. Every contractor that showed up was very professional and neat. We paid after each portion was finished, as they had outlined in the beginning, so there was never any anxiety. The design of their system is very sleek--they move exhaust pipes so the panels line up nicely and the wires are hidden in our attic. It shows thoughtfulness and is extra work on their part to not have unsightly wires exposed to weather. We passed our inspection with flying colors and are very happy. It's been 6 months so far and we are still very happy with our system and with Green Sun's level of service to this day. Highly recommend!

They did such a great job installing our generator, after getting an electric vehicle I decided to have them install an EV charger in my garage. It’s been amazing! And Glen and his team at Green Sun made it so easy. The charger was installed in a perfect location and hardwired to my electric panel. They also made sure I had all the paperwork needed to file for reimbursements with the state and the electric company and I received the full amount allowed under the “make ready” program – $1,500. Very professional installation process, Green Sun took care of all aspects from municipal approvals to contractor scheduling, Along the way they kept us informed on every single step of the process via email and phone. They gave us the electrical and plumbing installation dates about three weeks in advance and everything came off just as they said it would. The contractors were courteous, friendly and very professional. All we had to do was sign the contract and they made everything happen. Couldn't be more pleased. Best of all, after installation about a month ago we've had the power go out twice in the last week and the Generac performed as advertised.

I actually signed the contract with Green Sun Energy for the generator before I closed on my home. Green Sun Energy handled every call and all the paperwork. I could not have been more satisfied. The owner, Glen Koedding, really kept me informed every step of the way. There were no surprises at all. The installation was right on schedule. We have since lost power a number of times and the generator has worked without any issues. I promised after Hurricane Sandy, I would never go without power again. A generator installation requires both natural gas plumbing and electrical work and multiple Township inspections and approvals. Glenn Koedding is an excellent project manager. He kept the project on-track and kept me informed about the status of the installation. The gas and electric installers were very professional and completed their work on schedule. The Township electrical inspector remarked that the electrical work was well done. The price for the generator and installation was very competitive and the progress payments were documented and explained in advance. I decided to go with Green Sun after reading great reviews on various websites as well as feeling comfortable with Glen's industry knowledge and installation experience during our first meeting. I had already done quite a bit of research on solar so I was more concerned with finding a company that would strongly focus on proper installation and aesthetics and Green Sun came through on both. The installation team did a great job completing the entire project in one day even after being delayed by some snow. When finished, they left my property as clean as before they arrived and the installation looked great. I've seen some shoddy solar installations but Green Sun's attention to a clean design is apparent. Of course, functionally, everything has been great as well. The system has generated more than the conservative estimate I had received and I haven't had an electricity bill since.  recommendsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Facebook. ...i have always been interested in renewable energy, but delayed going solar for many reasons...looking back, my concerns had no real merit…converting to solar makes total sense, especially in new jersey, but didn’t realize that until I did my research...being that i lacked the technical, financial and logistical knowledge regarding the solar business, finding a knowledgeable and reputable solar company was my top priority...i wanted to work with a solar company that had time to answer all my questions and a company that was rooted in the state/community where i lived...i figured and was correct, that the permit process would be much easier with working with a local NJ solar company…after scouring the regular sites that host reviews, i stumbled across highly rated, Green Sun Energy Services (GSES)...Upon reaching out to GSES, Glen Koedding immediately contacted me...after an initial exchange of concerns, thoughts and expectations, Glen was able to map out an outline that was not only affordable, but a plan that would enable me to mitigate obsolescence and optimize new and emerging technology…once I was finally convinced that solar power was not only environmentally desirable but it would eventually save me a significant amount of money, I asked Glen from GSES, “what’s the catch?”…being extra cautious on a major acquisition, I must have asked this question to Glen, perhaps a dozen times, up to and after signing the contract agreement…Glen would say, “there is no catch”…being the ultimate cynic, I would always have a little doubt…here I am 8 months later and happy to report, “there is no catch”…the installation went smoothly, federal tax credits, NJ incentives are either received or in place and my utility bill is now pennies on the dollar…Glen is super “user friendly” and has not only answered every question I had, he helped me choose the solar equipment that met my current and future needs…I would recommend Green Sun Energy Systems to anyone considering converting to solar energy…

It’s been just shy of year since we had Green Sun Energy Services design and install a solar array and a standby generator at our home. I’d been thinking about “going solar” for some time. I spoke with one or two other solar-install companies before speaking with Green Sun. Glen, Green Sun head-honcho, came to my home and discussed the technical and economic aspects of the solar array. In addition to being very personable, I found Glen to be professional and exceedingly knowledgeable. I liked that fact that rather speaking with a sales rep, I was speaking with an owner of the company. And I took comfort in the fact that Green Sun is local (at least to me) and has been around for a number of years, has done many solar installs, and has several regular crews of installers. After surveying the attic and taking some measurements of the roof, Glen worked up an estimate for a solar array and standby generator. The estimate detailed what the system would look like, what it could do, and what it would cost. A further and very important consideration for me was what the solar array would look like. Having just completed a significant renovation to the exterior of our home, including a nice new roof, I didn’t want to compromise the look we achieved. In fact, I didn’t want to see the panels at all, at least from the front or sides of my home. Glen assured me that I wouldn’t. In fact, unlike some other solar-install companies, it turns out that Green Sun always sets the panels back at least four feet or so from the side edges of the roof. They “get” it. Since the payout looked good and I was very comfortable with Green Sun and Glen, we decided to proceed. Since part of my project was a standby generator, the electrical work was a bit more involved. Glen’s electrical contractor was amazing. He was easy to work with and really sweated the details. He showed up when we he said he would, and did all the prep work he could in anticipation of the actual solar-panel install and generator delivery. He obviously took great pride in his work, making sure everything was neat and expertly done. No less impressive were the solar-panel installers. Per the layout, they moved a roof vent and took the time necessary to line-up everything in accordance with Greg’s plan. The install proceeded without a hitch and looked great. Inspecting the attic, I couldn’t find a single fastener penetrating the roof deck; every screw/nail was sunk into the rafters. As promised, no part of the array is visible from the front or sides of the house. In fact, in my situation, the solar panels aren’t visible until I stand quite a distance away from the house in the backyard. Glen’s plumbing contractor showed up to plumb the stand-by generator as scheduled. Like the electrical, everything was done professionally and very neatly. In fact, when the inspector came by to perform his inspection, he commented on how neatly the unit was plumbed. As noted at the outset, my system has been operating for about a year. Everything started up without issue. My monthly electric bill is just under $3.00 per month; that’s not for usage –it’s a minimum that must be paid─ I have actually been banking electricity every month, for which I will receive a check/credit from my electric company at some point. I have cashed in the solar credits (SRECs) that I receive every few months. Between the SRECs, my $3-a-month electric bill, and the 30% federal tax credit, I’m on track for a 6-year or so payout. Just a couple of weeks ago, during the April Nor’easters, the power in my neighborhood went out for 4-5 hours. But not at my house; the generator kicked on in a few seconds. My only continuing awareness of the outage was how dark things were outside and the audible, but inoffensive drone of the generator. Bottom line, I couldn’t be more satisfied. The few questions I’ve had have been answered promptly and cheerfully by Glen or his business partner Chris. If you are thinking about “going solar,” or even just getting a standby generator, you really ought to give Glen at Green Sun a call. By the way, I understand that the federal tax credit is being phased out over the next 4-5 years, so if you are interested, you probably should move on it. I realize that this might sound like an “ad,” not a review, but it isn’t. I have no connection with Glen or Green Sun other than being an extremely satisfied customer; this review is simply my way of saying “thank you” to Green Sun.

My wife and I were looking to go solar and scheduled meetings with several different companies.  The representative from Green Sun was far more experienced, prepared, knowledgable, and helpful than everyone else we met with. He walked us through every aspect of going solar and the various options in great detail. We felt very confident with choosing Green Sun and they did not let us down.  Glen always had time to answer all my questions the whole way through the process and they delivered in every way.  We were also in need of a new roof and Green Sun’s roofer did an excellent job.  It was nice to only have to deal with Green Sun on both projects. The Solar installation is one of the best ones I have ever seen.   Green Sun took great care to move vents, attic fans, and pipes for the best aesthetic look possible.  When I asked their competitors what they would do about these obstacles on the roof, they said they would install the panels around them.  I have seen solar panels done this way, with awkward gaps and and a non streamlined look.  This is not what you get when you work with Green Sun. From our very first phone call, through the planning, the permits, the installation, to our very first SREC check, we are extremely pleased with Green Sun Energy Services and would recommend them to anyone.

From start to finish they were very responsive and didn't treat you like you were just another customer in line. We went back and forth a few times on various options before settling on a final design. Then the township delays began, but they helped us navigate those problems before and after installation! They did things in the installation I didn't even think of, such as ensuring all of the wiring was as hidden as possible. Now we look at other installations and notice those things that we wouldn't have liked to see on our house! After all the township delays it was finally time to turn it on. As with just about any technology it didn't work at first. But that same night I received an email with photo instructions on how to troubleshoot. Unfortunately that didn't work either, but they had someone out the very next day. Anybody can do your install, but how you are treated after they have your money leaves a lasting impression. They don't ignore my emails and are very responsive. If someone is looking for Solar this is the company you want to hire!

There were a few delays beyond their control (snow, town permits, technical problem with the actual generator), but I was so pleased with the professionalism of everyone I dealt with Glen, Karen, Jennifer, Chris and all the technicians who worked to install our generator. Early this morning I experienced our first extended loss of power due to a large tree falling in the area.  After a few seconds in the dark and some supernatural sounds, our generator powered right up.   Nine hours later power is still out but our generator is going strong.
