Thirty-six Hanwha Q.PEAK panels at 300 watts each came to 10.8 kW on rail-free mounting, finished on 21 October 2017, each with its own Enphase IQ6 microinverter rather than a shared central inverter. JCP&L is the utility.

An array facing due east

The panels sit on a single face at a 22-degree pitch, pointing at an azimuth of 90 degrees — due east, not south. The design models it at about 77 percent of the reference case. An east-facing array does its work in the morning and is finished well before the afternoon, which suits a household that is up and using electricity early and is a poor match for one that is out until six. Thirty-six panels is a large array for a house of this size, and the size is doing what the aspect cannot.

What is booked for 2026

Two layers of old shingle are to come off 3,300 square feet down to the sheathing, with a GAF Timberline HDZ system in Hickory going back on under a 50-year warranty, aluminum drip edge along 330 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys, and a ridge vent along the peak. The array comes down first and goes back on a new IronRidge mounting system rather than the mounts it has been sitting on since 2017.

Why the mounting is being replaced, not reused

A reset can put the original mounting back, and often does. Here it will not. The mounts that come off will have spent nine winters on that roof holding thirty-six panels. Reusing them would mean a new roof with old hardware bolted through fresh shingles, which is the one economy on a job like this that undoes the reason for doing it. New mounting and new flashing at every fixing is more work, and it is the difference between a roof that is new and a roof that is merely re-covered.

Why an array comes off for a roof at all

An array is fastened down for twenty-five years and more, and this one has been up since 2017 with years left in it. The roof beneath it has not lasted as well. That is the situation this job exists for: the panels are worth keeping, the shingles are not, and the only way to deal with the second without wasting the first is down, roof, new mounts, back up.

Storm damage, a new roof, and the array back up

A storm in July 2026 damaged the existing roof badly enough to require a full replacement, which in turn required the 36-panel array to come down before any roofing work could begin. Two layers of old shingles came off 3,300 square feet of deck, down to the sheathing. A GAF Timberline HDZ system in Hickory went back on, with aluminum drip edge along the rakes and eaves, ice shield at the eaves and in the valleys, and a ridge vent running the peak. An attic fan was decommissioned at the same time, with ridge vents taking over its function, and a length of J-channel was installed along the fascia.

Once the new roof was on, the array went back — all 36 panels — but not onto the hardware that came off. Mounting that had held those panels through nine winters was not going back through fresh shingles and new flashing. The reinstallation used an entirely new IronRidge rail-based mounting system in place of the original rail-free Ecolibrium mounts, with new flashing at every fixing point. The panels themselves and their microinverters were retained; everything connecting them to the roof was replaced.

The sequencing mattered as much as the materials. Panels off, storm-damaged roof torn out, new GAF system installed, new mounting set, panels back up. Each step depends on the one before it, and the result is a roof and an array that are both new where they meet.
