A Tesla Universal Wall Connector in North Brunswick

North Brunswick, NJ · Client since November 2024

Delavar from North Brunswick, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since November of 2024. The charger went into the garage in January of 2025: a Tesla Universal Wall Connector, third generation and hardwired, 48 amps and 11.5 kW on a dedicated 60-amp circuit, with surge protection on the charger circuit. The Universal model is the one worth knowing about – it carries a built-in J1772 adapter, so it charges a Tesla and any other electric car on the market without a dongle hanging off the end of the cable. That matters more than it sounds when the car in the driveway in five years may not be the one there today. The service was measured beforehand and had the capacity to take the circuit.

EV charger questions from North Brunswick homeowners

Does a 200-amp service in North Brunswick automatically have room for a 48-amp charger?

No. The rating on the service is not the same thing as the capacity left in it. The existing loads decide: electric heat, air conditioning, an electric range, a dryer, a water heater, a pool, a hot tub, solar equipment and anything else substantial all count against what is available. A load calculation answers the question; the number on the panel does not.

What circuit does a Tesla Wall Connector need?

At its maximum 48-amp output it normally needs a 60-amp circuit, because the code requires overcurrent protection for a continuous load to be at least 125 percent of it. Where the electrical system cannot support that, the Wall Connector can be commissioned lower and put on a correspondingly smaller circuit.

Can a NACS charger charge a car that is not a Tesla?

It depends on the vehicle's connector and on which charger it is. A standard Tesla Wall Connector uses NACS. The Universal version carries an integrated J1772 adapter as well, which makes it the more flexible arrangement for a household running more than one brand, and many manufacturers are moving to NACS in any case.
