The generator was commissioned that November: 18 kW on natural gas, on a 100-amp service-entrance switch, sized against a 13 kW calculation for the 2,000 square foot house. A sump pump, two refrigerators, a separate freezer, a washer and a gas dryer make up the load. A large machine on a small service is a combination worth understanding: the generator is sized for what the house draws and for the surge when a pump starts, not for the rating of the service it connects to. Annual maintenance, an extended parts-and-labor warranty and monitoring we manage all sit behind it.

Will an 18 kW generator run an entire Springfield house?

For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.

What gas pressure does a generator need?

It is model-specific and has to be read off the specification sheet rather than assumed. A current 22 kW model, for instance, specifies a minimum natural-gas pressure of 3.5 inches water column. Different models carry different requirements.

How often should a standby generator be serviced?

Maintenance follows the schedule for the exact model and its operating hours. For current air-cooled units that means an annual inspection plus scheduled work at hour-and-year intervals. Extended running during a long outage can bring the next service forward.
