Does a standby generator need a permit in Rumson?
A permanently installed generator normally requires New Jersey Uniform Construction Code permits, because it involves permanent electrical and fuel work. Depending on the property and the municipality, building, zoning, floodplain, utility or fire-code review can also apply.
Should gas pressure be checked while the generator is running?
Yes. Operating pressure means more than a static reading taken with the generator off. The fuel system has to hold adequate pressure while the generator runs and other appliances may also be drawing gas. That matters most when an existing residential service is being reused.
Does a house with a generator still need surge protection?
Yes. A generator protects against the loss of utility power; it does nothing about a surge. Current electrical code includes surge protection for applicable dwelling services, so whole-house surge protection belongs in a properly designed generator installation rather than being treated as an extra.
