Hazlet, NJ · Client since 2021

Joann from Hazlet, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since 2021. The generator was commissioned in September: 16 kW on natural gas, on a managed whole-house switch, sized against a 16 kW calculation for the 1,900 square foot house. A double electric oven is most of the reason a house that size needs that much – two elements drawing together approach the demand of everything else combined – with a refrigerator, a separate freezer, a washer, a gas dryer and a dishwasher completing the load. The machine is sized to carry the whole house rather than a nominated list of circuits, which is what keeps the oven out of the argument during an outage: nothing has to be left off a list to make room for it.

Standby generator questions from Hazlet homeowners

Does new gas piping have to be pressure tested in Hazlet?

Yes. Gas piping subject to the adopted fuel-gas code must be inspected and tested before it is accepted. New Jersey adopts the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, which governs the inspection, the test pressure and how long the test has to hold.

Can the generator run the propane tank right down?

It is a poor outage plan. Propane should be monitored and topped up before the generator runs out. Usable capacity is not the same as the tank's nominal water capacity, and cold weather reduces how much vapour the tank can deliver just when the machine is working hardest.

Can a standby generator run central air conditioning?

Yes, when it is sized for it. The design has to account for both the running demand and the starting surge of the air-conditioning equipment. Load-management equipment can be used where necessary so that demand does not all arrive at once.
