Solar Panel Installation and Roofing Installation in Manalapan, NJ | 22 Panels and Critter Guard

Manalapan, NJ · Client since September 2024

Wai Moy has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since September of 2024, when the roof and the solar array were bought on the same day. The roof was finished on 15 October 2024 and the array nine days after it.

4,700 square feet, stripped to the deck

A single layer of old shingles came off down to the sheathing and left with the dumpster. What went back on is a GAF Timberline HDZ system in Pewter Gray carrying a 50-year warranty, over deck protection across the whole exposed sheathing, with aluminum drip edge along 442 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys and a ridge vent along the peak.

22 panels across three roof faces

Twenty-two REC 460 watt panels came to 10.12 kW on Snap-N-Rack mounting, finished on 24 October 2024. They sit in three groups rather than one: two on the back of the house at a 31-degree pitch facing east-southeast, and one on the right-hand slope at 45 degrees facing south-southwest. The south-facing group models at about 110 percent of the reference case and the two on the back at 92 and 89, which is the whole argument for a SolarEdge optimizer on every panel — three faces catching the sun at three different times of day can share one inverter without the weakest group setting the pace. JCP&L is the utility and the first year was designed for about 12,595 kWh.

162 feet of critter guard, fitted at the same time

Squirrels and birds nest in the gap between a panel and the roof, and once they are in, getting them out means taking panels off. A mesh skirt clipped around the array perimeter closes that gap. Fitting it during the installation is less expensive than fitting it later, for the plain reason that the crew, the ladders and the roof access are already there and nothing has to come apart to reach the edge.

Why the roof went first

An array is bolted to a roof for twenty-five years and more, so shingles near the end of their life underneath one are a job waiting to happen: panels off, roof on, panels back. Buying both together and finishing them nine days apart meant the panels went down onto new shingles with a 50-year system under them, and the roof beneath this array should not need touching again while the array is on it.

Why Manalapan homeowners choose Green Sun Energy Services

One company designs the roof and solar system together, so there is no finger-pointing between a roofer and a solar installer.

Questions from Manalapan homeowners

RoofingWhat happens to old roofing materials?

Torn-off shingles and debris are normally placed in a dumpster or dump trailer and taken to an approved disposal or recycling facility. Disposal should be included clearly in the project scope.

RoofingCan moss damage a roof?

Moss can hold moisture against shingles and lift edges as it grows. Shaded, tree-covered New Jersey properties are more prone to moss, so safe removal and control of moisture and debris are important.

RoofingCan roof warranties be transferred when I sell my Manalapan home?

Some can, but transfer rules differ by manufacturer and contractor. There may be deadlines, fees, or one-time transfer limits, so homeowners planning to sell should keep warranty documents and proof of installation.

SolarWho receives the certificates on a leased system?

That depends on the lease or power purchase agreement. Where solar is third-party owned, the system owner commonly retains the renewable-energy certificates and related incentives because it owns the generating equipment. The contract should say explicitly who owns the environmental attributes.

SolarWhy is annual offset the number that matters?

Because the value of net metering is strongest where solar production offsets electricity the household would otherwise have bought. Producing substantially more than a year's consumption means the surplus is ultimately treated differently from the credit that offsets consumption.
