Gay from Scotch Plains, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since August of 2020. The generator was commissioned in April of 2021: a 16 kW Generac Guardian on natural gas, set at the back corner of the house behind the air conditioning, with a 150-amp service-entrance transfer switch and a smart management module. The load survey is what set the size – 1,200 square feet, but carrying two washers, both an electric and a gas dryer, a refrigerator, a freezer, a dishwasher and a sump pump, which is a heavier draw than the floor area suggests. What happens if the manufacturer and Scotch Plains disagree?
The installation has to satisfy all applicable requirements. A manufacturer's listing cannot be ignored, and a manufacturer's minimum clearance does not cancel a municipal zoning requirement. Where requirements conflict or the interpretation is uncertain, the Authority Having Jurisdiction is consulted before the work goes in rather than after.
What is a sediment trap for?
It helps stop foreign material in the gas line from reaching the generator's fuel controls. Where the fuel-gas code and the system configuration call for one, it is fitted, and the maintenance schedule includes inspecting or cleaning it.
Can a generator go under a deck?
Only if the specific installation satisfies every requirement for overhead clearance, airflow, exhaust, fire separation, carbon-monoxide safety and service access. Because the applicable guidance commonly requires substantial overhead clearance, many ordinary under-deck locations will not qualify. It is a site-specific review rather than a standard placement.
