We installed a 16 kW Generac Guardian that October, running on natural gas and sited outdoors beside the meter, switching the whole house through a 200-amp service disconnect with automatic load shedding. The sizing came from the load survey rather than the floor area alone: 3,000 square feet is only part of it, and the well pump and sump pump are the reason the number matters, since a house on a well has no water at all without power and a sump that stops during a storm is how a basement floods. The code calculation called for a minimum of 15 kW and the 16 kW machine covers it with room to spare. One of our service plans supports it, with remote monitoring Green Sun manages directly, and the most recent annual service was completed in July of 2026 at 155 hours on the meter.

What does a whole-house generator actually mean?
Whole-house generally means the transfer equipment serves the home's main electrical system rather than a small emergency-circuit panel. It does not promise unlimited capacity. High-demand appliances may still be prioritized or briefly shed while generator capacity is being used elsewhere.
Can a standby generator be used instead of utility power?
Residential standby generators are intended for backup during outages rather than as a permanent substitute for normal utility service. Running through an extended outage is expected, but maintenance requirements become considerably more important during prolonged continuous use.
