JCP&L interconnected it in May. 107 feet of critter guard went around the perimeter, which matters more on a smaller array than people expect – squirrels and birds nest in the gap between panels and roof, and the damage they do to wiring is not visible from the ground until production drops. The existing roof was in good enough condition to take the array as it stood.

Does Keyport decide whether the installation is code-compliant?
The municipal construction department reviews and inspects the work under the Uniform Construction Code, but the substantive electrical requirements come from the statewide Electrical Subcode rather than from local preference. Municipalities may also administer zoning requirements where those apply.
What is the difference between a lease and a power purchase agreement?
Under a lease the customer generally pays an agreed periodic amount for the use of the system; under a power purchase agreement the customer generally pays for the electricity the system produces. Both normally involve third-party ownership, and terms vary considerably between providers.
Does the utility have to approve the system?
Yes. A grid-connected residential array must receive utility interconnection approval before it can legally operate in parallel with the distribution system. New Jersey's interconnection requirements and the utility's own procedures both govern it.
