22 kW Standby Generator Installation in Allentown, NJ | Whole-House Backup

Allentown, NJ · Client since August 2020

Wendy from Allentown, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since August of 2020. The generator was commissioned that September, a month after the paperwork: a Generac Guardian rated 19.5 kW on natural gas, outdoors beside the meter, with a 200-amp service-entrance switch and a smart management module. The load calculation asked for 17 kW across 3,900 square feet, carrying an electric oven and an electric dryer alongside two refrigerators, a freezer, a washer and a dishwasher. An all-electric kitchen and laundry is what makes the difference here – each of those appliances draws several times what its gas equivalent would, and together they set the size of the machine. The generator is supported by annual maintenance, a seven-year extended parts-and-labor warranty, and monitoring we manage.

Thank you, Wendy. A detailed estimate is not paperwork for its own sake: a generator project has gas, electrical, permits and inspections in it, and setting all of that out in advance is how a household knows what it is agreeing to. The 22 kW whole-house backup at your home in Allentown has been ours to service since.

Standby generator questions from Allentown homeowners

Can the generator be connected to any nearby gas pipe?

No. The branch supplying the generator has to be sized for the flow and pressure the machine needs. A pipe that happens to be close by may be too small, or may already be carrying too much load. Undersized piping shows up as poor starting, unstable running, reduced output or a generator that shuts down under load.

How can a whole house be carried on a smaller electrical service?

Through load management. One or more large loads are controlled so they do not start at the same moment, or shut down briefly if generator demand climbs too high. That is what allows whole-house coverage where the raw sum of every connected load would otherwise exceed the machine.

Does a generator in Allentown have to sit twelve inches above the flood elevation?

That figure should not be treated as a universal rule without looking at the actual property. The required elevation can depend on the flood-zone designation, the municipal freeboard, the Design Flood Elevation, Coastal A or V Zone conditions, NJDEP requirements and the applicable building-code provisions. Each flood-zone installation is worked out individually.
