The generator was commissioned that August: a Generac Guardian rated 19.5 kW on natural gas, outdoors beside the meter, with a 200-amp service-entrance switch, a smart management module and surge protection. The load calculation asked for 19 kW across the 2,125 square foot house, with a double electric oven, two refrigerators, a washer, a gas dryer and a dishwasher on the list. One detail decided the schedule rather than the equipment: the gas line feeding the house had to be sized to carry the generator’s 327,000 BTUs on top of everything already connected to it, which is the sort of thing that has to be settled before a machine this size can run properly. Can a generator sit next to the air-conditioning condenser?
Potentially, provided the installation preserves the clearances required by both machines. The generator's hot exhaust should not be directed at the condenser, and neither unit should obstruct the other's airflow or service access. In practice that often means about three feet or more of separation, but the manufacturers' actual requirements decide it.
Can a generator go in the side yard of a Oceanport property?
Often yes, provided the side yard satisfies both the manufacturer's clearances and the municipality's zoning requirements. The site review covers the property-line setback, windows and doors, the gas and electric meters, the air conditioner, neighboring structures, flood conditions, service access and any local screening requirement.
What gas pressure does a generator need?
It is model-specific and has to be read off the specification sheet rather than assumed. A current 22 kW model, for instance, specifies a minimum natural-gas pressure of 3.5 inches water column. Different models carry different requirements.
