A new roof in May:
Eric in Freehold has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since April of 2024. He booked the roof and the standby generator on the same day.
The old shingles came off down to the sheathing and went into a dumpster, and 3,400 square feet went back on: GAF roof deck protection over the bare sheathing, ice shield three feet up from every gutter edge and through all the valleys, GAF Pro-Start along the eaves and rakes, aluminum drip edge, and GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in charcoal, finished with ridge vent along the ridges. The roofing system carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty. Signed on 17 April, finished on 14 May, twenty-seven days start to end.
17 kW on natural gas in October
The generator followed five and a half months later. It is a Generac Guardian 18 kW home standby, model 7226. It delivers 17 kW on natural gas, which is what this house runs on.
The load survey is the interesting part here. It is a 2,100 square foot house with a pool, and almost everything that would normally dominate an electrical calculation runs on gas instead: the furnace, the clothes dryer, the range and the hot water. What remains on the electrical side comes to 17,496 watts, of which the three-ton air conditioning is 3,000. Take that off the top during an outage and the machine is holding 14,496 watts, comfortably inside what 17 kW delivers.
What stays on the list is the less obvious half, and the more important one: three refrigerators, a sump pump, the pool filter, the dishwasher, the microwave, the garbage disposal, the washer and both garage door openers. Three refrigerators is a great deal of food to lose. A sump pump is the load that decides whether an outage during heavy rain stays an inconvenience or becomes a second problem in the basement.
The transfer switch is service-rated at 200 amps, so it takes the place of the main disconnect rather than sitting behind it, which is one enclosure on the wall instead of two. It stands outdoors beside the meter, with surge protection and a smart management module built in. The generator was commissioned on 2 October 2024 and was last serviced in October 2025.
