Kenneth Cinque has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since January of 2020, when the roof and the solar array were bought on the same day. The roof went on first and the panels followed, both in the early spring of that year.
3,600 square feet, stripped to the deck
A single layer of old shingles came off down to the sheathing and left with the dumpster. Deck protection went over the exposed sheathing, then a GAF Timberline HDZ system carrying a 50-year warranty, aluminum drip edge along 338 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys, and a ridge vent along the peak.
25 panels and 8 kW
Twenty-five Hanwha Q.PEAK DUO panels at 320 watts each came to 8 kW on Ecolibrium Solar mounting, running into a SolarEdge SE6000H inverter with an optimizer on every panel. JCP&L is the utility and the first year was designed for about 9,333 kWh.
All-black modules, and why they suit a new roof
These are the black-backsheet panels: black frame, black background behind the cells, instead of the usual silver frame and white grid. It changes nothing about what the array produces and a good deal about how the house reads from the street. It is worth settling at the same time as the shingles rather than afterwards, because the two are seen together and only one of them can be chosen twice.
Why the roof went first
An array is bolted to a roof for twenty-five years and more, so shingles at the end of their life underneath one become a second job with a date already on them — panels off, roof on, panels back. Buying both together settled that in advance. The panels went down onto a deck that had been stripped, seen and covered properly, under a 50-year system, and nothing beneath them will need attention while they are there.
