Shelley from Mantoloking, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since April of 2023. The generator was commissioned in February of 2024: 18 kW on natural gas, on a 200-amp service-entrance switch with three smart management modules and surge protection. The size was decided by the township rather than by the load calculation. Mantoloking permits no more than 65 decibels at the property line, and where a 22 kW machine measures 67, the 18 kW measures 65 – so the smaller machine was the only one that could be installed. The calculation asked for 16 kW across the 3,400 square foot house, so the 18 kW still covers it, and the three management modules do the work a larger machine would otherwise have done. What size standby generator does a Mantoloking home need?
The correct size is decided by the electrical loads the generator is expected to run, not by the square footage of the house. Not every ground-level installation uses the same anchoring method. The requirement changes with the model, the pad type, wind exposure, flood requirements, elevated platforms and any local engineering requirement. The model manual and the site conditions decide it.
