Does the residential building code apply to a generator?
It can. For applicable one- and two-family dwellings New Jersey adopts the 2024 International Residential Code, subject to state amendments. Structural and flood-related generator installations may therefore need review under the residential subcode as well as the electrical and fuel requirements.
Should gas pressure be checked while the generator is running?
Yes. Operating pressure means more than a static reading taken with the generator off. The fuel system has to hold adequate pressure while the generator runs and other appliances may also be drawing gas. That matters most when an existing residential service is being reused.
Can we plant shrubs or put a fence around the generator?
Yes, provided the planting or fence stays outside the required airflow and service clearances. Site-selection guidance treats shrubs, bushes and trees as part of the clear space around the machine, and clearance should be measured against how the planting will grow rather than how it looks the week it goes in. Local zoning may separately require screening.
