Cellular monitoring was fitted at the start, along with an extended warranty, and the machine has been seen every fall since – October of 2021, November of 2022, December of 2023, November of 2024 and November of 2025. Three separate repairs were handled under the manufacturer’s warranty across 2022 and 2023, which is where the monitoring earns its place: a fault on a machine that runs once a week for a few minutes is not something a household notices, and the alternative to being told is finding out during an outage. Does the transfer switch need flood protection as well as the generator?
Yes. A flood review should cover much more than the generator enclosure. FEMA recommends that a residential standby system consider elevation or protection of the generator, the transfer switch, the normal and emergency panels, the feeders and the control wiring together.
How does the starting battery stay charged?
The system includes battery-charging provisions so the starting battery stays ready while the generator waits for an outage. A charging fault, a blown fuse, a wiring problem or simply a tired battery can stop a generator starting when it is needed, which is why battery condition is part of routine maintenance rather than an afterthought.
Does the house run on the generator during its weekly exercise?
Not necessarily -- it depends on the generation of equipment, the controller and the configuration. Traditional systems commonly exercise without transferring the house at all. Newer equipment with current controls may support different exercise and transfer behaviour.
