Every interval since has been kept – the eight-year service in 2022, the nine-year in 2023, and the ten-year interval in 2024 and again in 2025. Each visit has fallen in October, which is the right time of year for it: the machine is put in order before the winter storms rather than after the first one has already found the fault. Can the existing natural-gas service in a Holmdel home supply a generator?
Often yes, but the gas system has to be evaluated first. The review covers the generator's BTU demand, meter capacity, available pressure, regulator capacity, pipe diameter and length, and every other gas appliance in the house -- furnace, boiler, water heater, range and fireplace among them.
Is an emergency shutdown required?
The 2023 National Electrical Code contains requirements addressing emergency shutdown of generator prime movers. Whether and how they apply is determined from the generator's rating, its location, the model and the installation, and the factory equipment is evaluated against them rather than presumed to comply.
Can we build an enclosure around the generator?
A secondary enclosure should not be added unless the finished installation still complies with the manufacturer's requirements. Restricting the machine can reduce cooling airflow, trap heat, recirculate exhaust, block service access and create unsafe carbon-monoxide conditions. The factory enclosure is already engineered as part of the generator.
