Generac 22 kW Standby Generator in Atlantic Highlands, NJ | 200-Amp Service-Rated Switch

Atlantic Highlands, NJ · Client since October 2020

Curtis from Atlantic Highlands, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since October of 2020. He signed in October and the generator was commissioned in late February, a 22 kW Generac on a pad with a 200-amp service-rated transfer switch and two management modules balancing the heavy loads. A Generac service contract has covered it since, which on a machine this size is the difference between a long life and a short one. Atlantic Highlands is in Monmouth County.

Excellent installation of our Generac generator, and fantastic regular maintenance! So happy to not be concerned about tropical storms and other events cutting our power here on the shore!

Thank you, Curtis. Tropical storms are exactly the case the 22 kW Generac at your home in Atlantic Highlands was bought for, and a service-rated transfer switch means the house changes over whether anybody is home or not. Regular maintenance is what turns that from a hope into an expectation.

Standby generator questions from Atlantic Highlands homeowners

Does the transfer switch need flood protection as well as the generator?

Yes. A flood review should cover much more than the generator enclosure. FEMA recommends that a residential standby system consider elevation or protection of the generator, the transfer switch, the normal and emergency panels, the feeders and the control wiring together.

What gas pressure does a generator need?

It is model-specific and has to be read off the specification sheet rather than assumed. A current 22 kW model, for instance, specifies a minimum natural-gas pressure of 3.5 inches water column. Different models carry different requirements.

Does a generator produce less on natural gas than on propane?

Some models do have a lower rated maximum output on natural gas than on propane -- a current 22 kW machine is rated 22 kW on LP and 21 kW on natural gas. Other models carry their own ratings, so the model-specific specification sheet is what settles it rather than a general rule.
