Standby generator questions from Highlands homeowners
Can Highlands require a generator to sit farther from the house than the manufacturer does?
Yes. Another applicable requirement can result in greater separation than the manufacturer's listed minimum -- equipment may be permitted eighteen inches from a qualifying wall while the local ordinance requires several feet from a property line. Both requirements have to be satisfied; neither cancels the other.
Can a generator go under a deck?
Only if the specific installation satisfies every requirement for overhead clearance, airflow, exhaust, fire separation, carbon-monoxide safety and service access. Because the applicable guidance commonly requires substantial overhead clearance, many ordinary under-deck locations will not qualify. It is a site-specific review rather than a standard placement.
Can the existing natural-gas service in a Highlands home supply a generator?
