Commissioned on 7 October 2014. A 16 kW Generac on natural gas in a steel enclosure on its own pad, behind a 200-amp service-rated managed whole-house transfer switch. The house is 2,700 square feet, and the load survey has two entries that matter more than the square footage does: a double electric oven and two sump pumps.

They pull in opposite directions, which is what makes the sizing interesting. The double oven is a large steady draw and the reason a house this size needs a machine this size at all – electric cooking can rival everything else in a home running at once. The sump pumps are the reason the house is carried whole rather than on a nominated list of circuits: a pump that stops during a storm is how a basement floods, and the storm is precisely when the power goes. One drives the number up; the other decides that nothing gets left off the list.

It has been on our Silver plan since it was installed – annual maintenance, on the calendar, by somebody whose job it is to remember.

Holiday lighting, ten years later

November of 2024, and a first season of Christmas lights – up in early November, down after the New Year, installed and removed by us. There is no technical connection at all between hanging lights on a roofline and maintaining a standby generator, and none is needed. They come from the same instinct: hand over the jobs that are seasonal, awkward, or easy to put off until they turn into a problem.

Properly selected temporary clips should have minimal effect on the roofing. The rule that matters is that nothing about hanging a light should compromise the shingle sealing, the flashing or the waterproofing of the roof. A decoration is never worth a leak.
