A single layer off, and a new roof on
One layer of shingle came off down to the sheathing, cleaned up and carted away. What went back on was GAF roof deck protection over the bare sheathing, ice shield three feet up from every gutter edge and through all the valleys, GAF Pro-Start along the eaves and rakes, aluminum drip edge, and GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in pewter gray with matching ridge caps. Every pipe flange was replaced and all flashings sealed. The roofing system carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty. Signed on 11 August 2014 and finished on 16 September.
Sixteen circuits rather than the whole house
This is the smaller kind of standby job and the reasoning behind it is worth setting out, because whole-house backup is not automatically the right answer.
The house is 1,000 square feet on a 150-amp service, and almost everything with a real appetite for power runs on gas: the furnace, the clothes dryer, the range and the hot water. The electrical calculation comes to 14,748 watts. The machine is a Generac Guardian 16 kW home standby in a steel enclosure, model 6461, rated 16 kW on natural gas and on propane alike, and the house is on natural gas. It has room to spare.
What makes it a smaller job is the switch. Rather than a whole-house transfer switch sized to the service, this is a 100-amp switch feeding sixteen dedicated circuits, mounted indoors in the garage. Sixteen circuits is a decision rather than a limitation. The survey for this house lists two refrigerators, a sump pump, a microwave, a washer and two garage door openers, alongside a gas furnace that still needs power to fire and a three-ton air conditioner. Sixteen circuits is enough to carry that sort of list and leave the rest of the house waiting.
On a house this size, with the heavy loads already on gas, that covers nearly everything anyone would miss. The generator was commissioned on 9 October 2014 and was last serviced on 13 August 2026.
