An 18/17 kW Generac Guardian standby generator:

Gail in Red Bank, NJ had Green Sun Energy Services install a Generac Guardian 18/17 kW natural gas standby generator in May of 2024. The home is served by a 200-amp electrical service, and the system was sized for 1,650 square feet of living space. Fuel comes from natural gas.

The transfer arrangement is a managed whole-house setup using a Generac 200-amp Service Entrance Rated Automatic Transfer Switch (Model RXSW200A3). When JCP&L power goes out, the switch detects the outage and signals the generator to start, then transfers the full load automatically. Because it is a whole-house configuration, Gail does not have to decide which circuits stay live — everything comes back on. One Smart Management Module is wired in to handle one 50-amp device, giving the control system the ability to shed that large load automatically if demand approaches the generator’s limit, then restore it once headroom allows.

The generator itself is the Generac Guardian Model 7226, powered by an 816cc G-Force engine and fitted with the Evolution 2.0 controller with built-in Wi-Fi, so Gail can check the system’s status and receive alerts remotely. The unit sits on a DiversiTech prefabricated concrete pad (54″ × 31″ × 3″, 189 lbs) and is finished with a Bisque Fascia Base Trim Kit. A Group 26-R 12-volt battery handles the engine start.

On the electrical side, installation included a #4 AWG green-jacket copper ground wire and a #4 AWG copper bond from the water main to the service main. A PSP Service Entrance Rated Surge Protector, rated at 100,000 surge amps and carrying a lifetime warranty with downstream protection coverage, was installed as required for all new service mains. To meet NJAC 5:23-3.16, the crew also installed one water heater jumper. The package includes up to 20 feet of electrical and 20 feet of plumbing work.

The generator carries a 5-year limited warranty from Generac and a 5-year limited workmanship warranty from Green Sun Energy Services. Gail also has a maintenance plan in place, and Green Sun makes annual service visits to keep the system running reliably.

Standby generator questions from Red Bank homeowners

What is Base Flood Elevation and why does it matter here?

Base Flood Elevation is the elevation associated with the base flood -- generally the flood with a one percent chance of being reached or exceeded in any year. For a generator it is often the starting point for working out how high the mechanical and electrical equipment has to be protected or raised.

Does a generator produce less on natural gas than on propane?

Some models do have a lower rated maximum output on natural gas than on propane -- a current 22 kW machine is rated 22 kW on LP and 21 kW on natural gas. Other models carry their own ratings, so the model-specific specification sheet is what settles it rather than a general rule.

Will a larger gas meter be needed?

Possibly. A generator can significantly increase a home's maximum gas demand. If the existing meter or service cannot hold the required pressure while supplying the generator and the other appliances together, the gas utility may require an upgrade.
