Solar & Roofing in Hillsborough, NJ | 10.95 kW Solar + New Roof

Hillsborough, NJ · Client since February 2023

A new GAF roof:

Lauren in Hillsborough, NJ had Green Sun Energy Services replace the roof in February of 2023. The project covered 2,300 square feet of roof area. The crew stripped off the existing single layer of shingles down to the sheathing, cleaned up and hauled away all debris, and began from scratch. Aluminum drip edges went in along all rakes and eaves, followed by underlayment over the full deck. Ice shield was applied along the eave edges and in all valleys, extending three feet up the roof. GAF Pro-Start starter shingles ran along every eave and rake edge, and the field was re-shingled with GAF Timberline HDZ self-sealing, Class A fiberglass shingles, which meet ASTM D3462. The ridge was finished with GAF Cobra Ridge Vent and matching ridge cap shingles. All pipe flanges were replaced and all roof flashings properly sealed. An existing attic fan was decommissioned as part of the project; ventilation is now handled by the new continuous ridge vent. Up to two sheets of replacement plywood sheathing were included at no additional charge if needed. The work is covered by the GAF System Plus Lifetime Warranty — a 50-year roof warranty — along with a 5-year workmanship warranty from Green Sun.

A 10.95 kW solar array

With the new roof in place, Lauren had Green Sun return in March of 2023 to install a 10.95 kW rooftop solar array. The system is made up of 30 REC 365 N-Peak 2 panels with black frames and black backsheets, mounted on the Snap-N-Rack Rail Free mounting system with an array skirt designed for composition shingle roofs, which carries a 25-year warranty. Power conversion is handled by a SolarEdge SE10000H-US000NNC2 HD Wave inverter paired with S440 optimizers — the inverter carries a 12-year parts-and-labor warranty and the optimizers a 25-year parts-and-labor warranty. An integrated ANSI-C12 SREC meter and a 4G cellular modem with a 5-year data plan are included in the package. The array is designed to cover essentially all of the electricity this home uses, based on PSEG consumption. As part of the solar project, a subcontractor upgraded the electrical service panel from 150 to 200 amps with new grounding per code, giving the system the service capacity the installation required. The full installation package carries a 10-year limited workmanship warranty from Green Sun Energy Services. Green Sun can also help Lauren with SREC registration and walk through the financing and incentive questions that come with a solar installation.

The roof and the solar installation are connected in a straightforward way: the array was installed on a fresh GAF roof, so Lauren will not need to remove and reset the panels to address roofing work for the life of the warranty.

Questions from Hillsborough homeowners

RoofingDo I need a permit to replace my roof in Hillsborough, NJ?

Often yes, but the exact permit path depends on the municipality and scope of work. New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code governs permit requirements, and local construction offices administer them. A straightforward re-roof may be handled differently from structural deck repairs, framing changes, skylights, or other alterations, so the contractor should confirm the local requirements before work begins.

RoofingWhat is an enhanced manufacturer roofing warranty?

Some manufacturers offer stronger system warranties when approved contractors install a qualifying combination of shingles, underlayment, starter, ridge cap, ventilation, and related components. The exact coverage varies, so compare the actual written warranty instead of relying on marketing names.

RoofingCan a roof warranty transfer to a new owner?

Certain warranties can, subject to that warranty's own conditions and a required notification procedure with its own time limit. It is worth knowing the process before the house goes on the market rather than during the sale, and a transferable warranty is a genuine selling point.

SolarAre certificate payments guaranteed regardless of production?

No. Certificates depend on eligible measured or programme-recognized production, so a system that produces less creates fewer of them. The value attached to each one may be fixed; the number of them is not.

SolarWhich utility handles interconnection in Hillsborough?

The electric distribution company that serves the property. In New Jersey that is Jersey Central Power & Light, PSE&G, Atlantic City Electric or Rockland Electric depending on the address, and municipal electric systems can have their own requirements.
