A Generac 14 kW standby generator:
Dom in Freehold, NJ recently moved into a home that already had a Generac 14 kW natural gas standby generator — Model 5884 — installed back in 2013 by another contractor. Dom wanted a qualified service provider going forward, so in October 2026, Green Sun Energy Services took over care of the unit.
The generator is connected to a 200-amp electrical service and protects a dedicated set of essential circuits through a 60-amp transfer switch. When JCP&L power goes out, the transfer switch signals the generator to start and shifts those circuits over automatically. Fuel comes from natural gas.
Green Sun now handles maintenance on the unit under a scheduled service plan that covers annual visits and an extended parts-and-labor warranty. Dom does not need to track down service history or coordinate with the original installer — Green Sun knows the unit, keeps it maintained, and is there when Dom needs help.

Standby generator questions from Freehold homeowners
Can a generator sit next to the air-conditioning condenser?
Potentially, provided the installation preserves the clearances required by both machines. The generator's hot exhaust should not be directed at the condenser, and neither unit should obstruct the other's airflow or service access. In practice that often means about three feet or more of separation, but the manufacturers' actual requirements decide it.
What is a sediment trap for?
It helps stop foreign material in the gas line from reaching the generator's fuel controls. Where the fuel-gas code and the system configuration call for one, it is fitted, and the maintenance schedule includes inspecting or cleaning it.
What size standby generator does a Freehold home need?
The correct size is decided by the electrical loads the generator is expected to run, not by the square footage of the house. Central air, heat pumps, electric heat, well and sump pumps, refrigerators and freezers, electric ranges and dryers, pool equipment and EV chargers all count. Where a load is connected automatically, the generator either has the capacity for it or an approved load-management system controls it.
