A 14 kW Guardian on a service-rated switch
The machine is a Generac Guardian 14 kW home standby, model 6052, and it delivers 13 kW on natural gas, which is what this house runs on. It went in on 23 April 2013 and stands outdoors beside the meter.
The transfer switch is service-rated, which is worth explaining because it changes what the installation looks like on the wall. An ordinary transfer switch sits behind the main disconnect, so the house ends up with two enclosures and a run of cable between them. A service-rated switch takes the place of the main disconnect instead. One box, fed straight from the meter, and the generator is wired into the point where the power enters the house rather than partway down the line.
What this house asks it to carry is unusual, and it is the reason the job is worth writing up: three refrigerators and a separate freezer, all running at once. Add the electric dryer, the dishwasher, the microwave, the washer and the pool filter, and the everyday electrical load of a 2,000 square foot house is well above what the floor area would suggest. Cold storage is the load people forget when they think about an outage, because a refrigerator draws very little most of the time and then all at once, and because what it protects is not comfort but the contents, which do not survive a long outage and cannot be put back.
The roof, eleven days from signing
The roof came in June 2013: one layer of shingle stripped to the sheathing and taken away, then fifteen-pound felt over the deck, ice shield through the valleys and along the eaves, every pipe flange replaced, and 2,600 square feet of GAF Timberline HD shingles in charcoal. It carries a 30-year manufacturer warranty. Signed on 13 June and finished on 24 June, eleven days from one to the other.
The generator has been serviced ever since, most recently in October 2025.
