Seven-Year Interval Service on a Highlands Standby Generator

Highlands, NJ · Client since September 2020

Joe from Highlands, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since September of 2020. The standby generator at the house was installed by another company and activated in May of 2013, and Joe brought the servicing to us seven years later. We completed the seven-year service in September of 2020 – oil and filter, spark plugs, air filter, battery check and a run test under load – and inspected the fuel plenum, which came back clean with no rust found. That check matters more in Highlands than in most towns: a house this close to the bay takes salt in the air year round, and corrosion is what quietly ends a generator that is otherwise sound.

Standby generator questions from Highlands homeowners

Can a generator be installed in a flood zone in Highlands?

Yes, but the generator and its electrical equipment may need to be elevated or otherwise protected. The installation is evaluated against the property's FEMA flood zone, its Base Flood Elevation and Design Flood Elevation, the municipal flood ordinance, any applicable freeboard, and NJDEP requirements where they apply. It is a property-by-property assessment rather than a rule of thumb.

Should gas pressure be checked while the generator is running?

Yes. Operating pressure means more than a static reading taken with the generator off. The fuel system has to hold adequate pressure while the generator runs and other appliances may also be drawing gas. That matters most when an existing residential service is being reused.

Which fuel-gas code applies?

New Jersey currently adopts the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code as its Fuel Gas Subcode, which is what governs the piping, testing and shutoff arrangements on a natural-gas generator installation.
