Francis from Hillsborough, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since May of 2019. Does Hillsborough decide whether the installation is code-compliant?
The municipal construction department reviews and inspects the work under the Uniform Construction Code, but the substantive electrical requirements come from the statewide Electrical Subcode rather than from local preference. Municipalities may also administer zoning requirements where those apply.
What does a 460-watt panel mean?
It is rated to produce up to about 460 watts under standardised laboratory conditions. Twenty-five of them make 11.5 kW DC; twenty-six make 11.96 kW. The panel count and the wattage should multiply out to the DC system size stated in the proposal -- if they do not, something has been rounded that should not have been.
What happens when the panels make more than the house is using?
The surplus flows out through the meter to the grid and creates a net-metering credit, which can offset electricity drawn from the grid at another point in the billing period or later in the annualised period.
