Jeremy Munck has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since June of 2019, when the roof and the solar array were bought on the same day. The roof was finished on 19 July 2019 and the array in the middle of August.
3,600 square feet, stripped to the deck
A single layer of old shingles came off down to the sheathing and left with the dumpster. Deck protection went over the exposed sheathing, then a GAF Timberline HDZ system carrying a 50-year warranty, aluminum drip edge along 338 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys, and a ridge vent along the peak.
38 panels and 12.35 kW
Thirty-eight Hanwha Q.PEAK DUO panels at 325 watts each came to 12.35 kW on Ecolibrium Solar mounting, finished on 13 August 2019, running into a SolarEdge SE10000H inverter with an optimizer on every panel. JCP&L is the utility and the first year was designed for about 13,993 kWh.
The ridge vent, which nobody ever asks about
A continuous vent runs the length of the peak on this roof, as it does on most of the roofs described on this site. Its job is to let hot, damp air out of the attic at the highest point while cooler air is drawn in at the eaves, so the space breathes rather than holding moisture against the underside of the deck. It matters on any roof and it matters on this one in particular, because a good part of the surface is now under an array and will not be lifted again for decades. Ventilation is the sort of thing that is trivial to get right while the shingles are off and effectively impossible to revisit afterwards.
Why the roof went first
An array is bolted to a roof for twenty-five years and more, so shingles at the end of their life underneath one become a second job with a date already on them — panels off, roof on, panels back. Thirty-eight panels makes that a serious undertaking. Doing the roof first, three and a half weeks ahead, meant the deck was stripped, seen, vented and covered before a single mount was fastened through it.
