
Barry and Deborah in Lincroft have been Green Sun Energy Services clients since November of 2023. They signed for the standby generator and the solar array on the same day; the generator was commissioned that December and the array the following March.
22 kW and 10,000 watts managed
This is a 2,500 square foot house with an electrical calculation of 26,944 watts, which is a great deal for the floor area. A double electric oven and 6,000 watts of air conditioning account for most of the difference.
The machine is a Generac Guardian 22 kW, model 7042-2, delivering 19.5 kW on natural gas, behind a 200-amp service-rated transfer switch with surge protection. Three smart management modules sit on it, and between them they take 10,000 watts out of the calculation while the generator is running, leaving 16,944 watts for the machine to hold — inside its rating, and above the 17 kW the code calculation sets as a minimum.

Thirty-six REC 420-watt panels, 15.12 kW in total, on Snap-N-Rack mounting with a SolarEdge SE11400H HD Wave inverter and an optimizer on every panel. Estimated first-year production is 17,862 kWh and the utility is JCP&L.
Managed does not mean restricted
The phrase load management worries people, and the worry is almost always based on a misunderstanding worth clearing up.
A management module does nothing at all while the utility is supplying the house. It is not a limiter, a timer, or a smart meter deciding when somebody may use their oven. On grid power the double oven in this kitchen works exactly as it would in a house with no generator at all, because the modules are simply not engaged.
They engage only when the generator is running — which is a few dozen hours a year — and even then they do not switch anything off permanently. They hold a heavy load back for as long as the machine is busy with something else, then let it through. During an outage the oven may take a few minutes longer to come up to temperature. That is the entire imposition.
What is bought with it is substantial: a 22 kW machine covers a house that would otherwise have needed something considerably larger, sitting on a bigger pad, drinking more gas every week for the next two decades to exercise an engine that is mostly idle.
The array, of course, is doing none of this work. A grid-tied system disconnects the moment the utility fails, and must, so that it cannot energise a line a crew is working on. Fifteen kilowatts on the roof and the house is still dark until the machine beside it starts.

The array works on the days the grid is up and quietly lowers what the house draws from it; the generator only matters on the days it is not. Together they cover both halves of the problem.

Standby generatorWhy do outages last longer on some Lincroft streets than others?
Mature tree cover over overhead lines is the usual reason. Limbs coming down in wind, snow or ice take the lines with them, so heavily treed streets tend to see both more frequent outages and longer restoration times than open ones. It is one of the honest arguments for standby power rather than a portable generator.
SolarDoes a bigger array always produce more?
Generally yes when everything else is equal, but size alone does not decide annual production. A smaller unshaded south-facing array can outproduce a larger one that is shaded or poorly oriented. Azimuth, tilt, shading, inverter efficiency and module characteristics all bear on it.
Standby generatorHow quickly does it take over?
The automatic start sequence normally begins within seconds of the controller deciding that utility power has failed or fallen outside acceptable limits. There is a deliberate short delay so that a momentary flicker does not trigger a full start and transfer. Exact timing depends on the controller, the transfer switch and the configuration.
